The ALPINE KARST Publication seeks news notes or articles about original
exploration and research on caves in alpine karst and mountainous
regions.
Content: Maps, pictures, images are an important
addition to your article and we prefer an image-rich publication.
A decision to publish an image is never influenced by
overall length of publication, although layout of a shorter article
will impose some restrictions on number of images. And not all
pictures that show well in a slide show will look good in print.
It is important to provide a scene shot of the mountain, cirque or
ridge for your project, preferably with something for scale.
If you are showing pictures of the local karst or karst features,
again it is important to include something for scale.
Authors:
Addresses and email addresses of authors of articles are published,
so supply that information
Text:
It is preferred that text is submitted to the editor electronically,
either as email text or as email attachment in plain text, RTF, or
Word (.doc) format. Some of the formatting may change
to better fit the look of the overall publication.
Photo, Slides or Digital Images:
Photographs may be submitted on paper or electronically. Photos
may also be sent as slides. Photographs or slides submitted
electronically should be color scans (despite the target black-and-white
printing) with approximately 300 dpi in the final layout dimensions.
Acceptable digital formats include tiff, jpeg, esp, pdf
and psd file format. Again, resolution should be 300 dpi at
the final layout dimensions. As a general rule use a layout size of
5” x 7”. That should handle most situations. You
can also contact the editor. Since you will not know the final
layout size, please contact the editor.
Prints and slides will be returned
Captions and Image Credits:
Make sure you supply captions, photographer, and year with each photograph.
Maps:
Most cave maps are printed in black-and-white at full-page size or
smaller. If the size and detail on the map warrant it, a foldout may
be used. Black and white maps may be submitted as high-quality photocopies
of any size, and the editor will reduce and scan as needed.
If scans are sent electronically, they should be at least 300 DPI,
compressed, black-and-white TIFFs. Never apply JPEG compression to
line copy such as maps. Maps originally computer-drafted may be submitted
electronically. The preferred form is exported to black-and-white
or gray-scale compressed TIFF, but Illustrator, and other formats
can probably be converted here. Such maps may include gray areas or
gradients, provided that the grays are actually solid colors and not
dot patterns, unless the stippling is coarse enough that resampling
to a different size will not mess it up. If a computer-generated map
is sent as a bit map (gray-scale or black-and-white as appropriate),
the resolution should be at least 300 DPI.
The final image area in a single-fold foldout map can be no larger
than 10 by 14 inches to allow for margins. In exceptional cases, wider
foldouts may be used. Black-and-white or gray-scale foldouts may be
submitted in any of the formats allowed for smaller maps. The editor
should be consulted before a foldout is planned. |
